Acupuncture

Acupuncture is one modality of treatment within the system of Chinese Medicine that utilizes very fine needles to treat problems and disease. Unlike the hypodermic needles that are used for injections, acupuncture needles are not hollow, and are as fine as a single bristle on a toothbrush. They are inserted in specific sites, known as acupucture points, along energy channels, known as meridians, to harmonize and restore energy flow in the body. The needles do not hurt. There may be a slight sting or prick when the needle is first inserted, but the feeling is every mild, and quickly resolves. Patients do report “funny sensations” such as tingling, warmth, or on occasion, a “shock”, that again is mild and transient.

While acupuncture is therapeutic for many problems, it is not a panacea or “cure-all”. It is extremely effective for pain syndromes, from migraines to musculoskeletal problems. It is good for chronic inflammatory disorders to “calm” the inflammation. It is particulary good for women’s health ranging from prgnancy-related problems, e.g. hyperemesis gravida, to menopausal symptoms, or abnormal menstrual pain or bleeding. It is even good for fertility! Dr. Rowe highly recommends acupuncture fo his pregnant  patients as a safe and effective way to treat the mother without exposing the unborn baby to adverse drug effects. Acupuncture may also be used to treat cancer patients to improve the immune system or help the body to tolerate the adverse effects of radiation or chemotherapy. Acupuncture can be used for stress management, to relax the mind and body, and to counterbalance the degenerative effects of stress on the body. It can even be used for beauty and anti-aging in facials.  It is an excellent method to restore balance and  harmony to the body for wellness and preventative health. As a rare physician who has not only a Medical Degree but a Doctor of Oriental Medicine as well, Dr. Lui is especially adept at integrating acupuncture into a customized therapeutic regimen, and capable of direct partnership with primary care providers.
