How Does It Work?
We use the most advanced laser by Cynosure for laser hair removal, the Apogee Elite Laser System. This laser is a multi-application system that utilizes the Alexandrite wavelength (755 nm) and the Nd:YAG wavelength (1064 nm) to target the hair follicles of all skin types. The laser emits gentle pulses of light and heat that specifically target the pigment at the root of the hair follicles which then permanently destroys the hair follicel. That is why people with white, blonde, or exremely fair hair coloring are not good candidates for this procedure. Unlike electrolysis, laser treatments target more than 1 hair follicle at a time, and thus can treat large areas of hair anywhere on the body.
How Many treatments Are Necessary?
Multiple treatments are necessary as the laser can only seek and destroy the hair follicles that are actively growing in the anagen phase. Given that only 20-25% of all the hair follicles on our body are in the anagen phase at any one time, multiple treatments are designed to eliminate as many hair follicles as possible in successive anagen phases. The number of treatments necessary will vary from individual to individual based on skin type, skin tone, hair color, and hair density. Most patients will respond well to 4 to 6 treatments. The power and range of the Apogee Elite laser allows for a shorter course of therapy as each of the treatments may be scheduled every 3-6 weeks apart. Thus, a course of therapy may be completed in as little as 3 months, unlike other lasers of inferior quality which require 10 or more treatments scheduled over 12-18 months.
Does It Hurt?
The high grade professional quality of the Apogee Elite causes only mild discomfort for most patients, often described as similar to the snap of a rubber band. Pretreatment with the CoolSmart Zimmer helps to minimize the heat or “sting” of the laser. While local anesthesia is not necessary, patients who are extremely sensitive may request a topical anesthetic for a minimal charge.
Who Performs the Laser Treatments?
The laser treatments are performed by either Dr. Lui or Dr. Rowe to assure you of the best in clinical care. Their experience insures the minimal risk of burns and adverse effects.
What Are The Potential Complications?
Complications are rare and occur in less than 1% of patients. They may include burns, blistering, and subsequent changes in pigmentation of the skin (either darkening or lightening).
Contraindications
Laser hair removal is contraindicated for people who:
*Are hypersensitive to light in the iinfrared wavelength
*Take medication that is known to increase sensitivity to light
*Take anticoagulant medications
*Have seizure disorders triggered by light
*Are pregnant
*Have susspicious pigmented lesions on the skin
*Have Lupus
*Have received or are receiving gold therapy
*Have had unprotected sun exposure (within 3-7 days if using the YAG laser, or 4 weeks if using the Alexandrite laser)
